The lit harbour of Pythagorio at dusk, fishing boats moored along the waterfront where Elia stands.

The harbour sets the table. Grilled seafood, Samian recipes and a seat by the water, most evenings from May to October, twenty years running.

Elia Restaurant, Pythagorio harbour, Samos

Twenty years of Elia, from 2006 to 2026

A family kitchen opens on the Pythagorio harbourfront.

Season by season it grows: fish landed that morning, recipes carried from Samian kitchens, a wine list that runs deep on the island.

Ελιά is the Greek word for olive, the tree that has shaped this coastline for millennia. This year Elia turns twenty.

Nothing leaves the pass that we wouldn’t put in front of our own family.

Elia has stood on the same stretch of Pythagorio harbour since 2006, a family kitchen that grew, season by season, into one of the tables people on Samos actually recommend to each other.

The cooking follows the Aegean: fish landed that morning, meat from the hill villages behind the port, vegetables in season, and recipes carried from Samian kitchens and sharpened with a contemporary hand.

The wine list runs deep on the island itself, Samos muscat alongside bottles from across Greece, poured by people who can tell you where each one comes from. Through summer the tables along the water fill early and stay lively, lanterns overhead, boats rocking a few metres from where you’re sitting.

Evenings at Elia

Elia’s harbourside terrace filled with diners under string lights in the evening.
A table set for dinner with an olive branch centrepiece, overlooking the harbour at dusk.

Tables run along the stone quay, close enough to the water to hear it. Through July and August, live music starts as the lanterns come on.
